Liberty nightclub
The bathroom door closes behind me, and Iâm officially alone.
I turn to the right, towards the entrance and the shooter, and then glance away just as quickly â a dead guy, no more than thirty years old, is staring straight at me with blank eyes and a bloody face. His head isâ¦cracked, and when I look down and investigate the sticky, greyish substance on the concrete floor, I see that it is brains.
The bile rises, and my body rocks from side to side. I close my eyes, take a breath, and tell myself I can do this. I can handle this. I can find himâ¦
But fuck. What if I canât? What if he escaped? What if heâs dead? What if I just signed my death certificate?
A voice shatters the silence in between songs.
âWell fuck you, whore, I donât want you back, either! Fuck you!â
A pause follows. It sounds like someone is pleading with him over the phone.
âI ainât give a fuck what SWAT says, Iâve got them in bomb vests, and they can fuck themselves with a wrench.â He shoots into the ceiling again. Someone gasps in the darkness to my left â there are people in here who are alive. âDid you hear that? Bomb vests. Make one move and this place is dust. I donât care if I die.â
I pause, then look around. All of theâ¦the bodies, or whatever you want to call the dead people, are wearing the same clothes they died in. Vests? I never saw any vests. I never heard anything about vests.
An idea comes to me. Sliding down the hallway to hide myself, I take the number I got from Alonso before I left the bathroom, and text the police:
Iâm August Brees, Iâm a victim inside Liberty. There are no vests I can see. I am inside the club with a full view. Heâs just making threats to buy time. Please just storm the club now. NOW, while these people can still be saved. Many will die soon.
I stand up, the first time Iâve stood since it all started. I slide forward, up the hallway, careful not to step in any blood or trip on any spilled glasses. I press myself against a wall, where I have a pretty good view of the club. There are many bodies out on the dance floor, their pockets glowing with phones that keep ringing. I shake my head and look away. I know Corey wouldnât be there, because we escaped deeper into the club together. He has to be close to me.
I creep along the other edge of the wall, getting closer, closer, closerâ¦fuck.
I step on a pile of broken glass, sending out a loud crunching sound. I freeze, my body going numb.
âWho the fuckâs over there?â
I freeze as his form appears out of the entrance area. He walks forward, gun out, toward my end of the club. I have seconds to hide, and heâs almost hereâ¦
Behind the stage is the hallway leading back to the
